Upper Hunter Wellbeing Survey

Where There’s a Will and our school are committed to understanding the needs of your child/ren and we are excited to inform you of a wellbeing initiative that we are planning for this year. We are engaging The University of Melbourne to measure the wellbeing of our students, and we seek your support to allow your child/ren to participate in the Upper Hunter Wellbeing survey that will be completed during school hours. Please note that the survey does not ask students about self-harm, substance/alcohol use or sexual behaviour.

Year 6 Orientation Days 2020

Year 6 students are invited to Scone High School, for the first of their Orientation Days for Year 7, 2021 to be held on Wednesday 19th February 2020 between 9.30am – 2.30pm.

Year 6 students can bring their recess and lunch or purchase food from the Scone High School Canteen.

Students from outlying schools are to be delivered to Scone High School MPU by 9.20am and can be collected from the MPU at 2.40pm. If students travel on existing bus services, they will be able to wait in the school Library.

Students from Scone & Aberdeen Public Schools will be collected by bus at 9.05am and returned to their schools at 2.50pm.

Day 1: Term 1 Week 4 Wednesday 19^th February

Day 2: Term 2 Week 7 Wednesday 10^th June

Day 3: Term 3 Week 7 Wednesday 2^nd September

It is the title and trophy they all want to win...The Upper, Upper, Upper Hunter Cup.
Whilst perhaps a small area geographically, it is undoubtedly one with a high concentration of ever improving sporting talent.

In an NBA styled best of 7 playoff series, an impressive Year 7 and 8 squad were only narrowly defeated by Year 9, four games to two..

The 15 and under squad then combined and as a Year 7, 8 and 9 team, remarkably squared a series at two games all against the much bigger Year 12 side, before the Yr 12s called a halt to proceedings to concentrate on their formal and exams.

Lunch time and recess sport has been thriving even more this term with a touch football competition taking off, thanks Mr Austin. The active future looks bright...

Year 12 student Max Thackeray’s HSC artwork is currently on display in the library and looking great! Titled “A Shared Fate” it uses stencilled spray paint to depict the uniformed soldiers of 6 different nationalities involved in WW1.

Team Colours Day

The SRC ran “Team Colours Day” on Tuesday 24^th of September. Students and staff were encouraged to wear the jersey or colours of their favourite footy or sports team, and make a gold coin donation to the Fight Cancer Foundation.

Our SRC students also cooked a BBQ and sold snacks and drinks at lunch to raise money for this worthy cause. A “Free Throw” and “Footy Toss” competition were also run at lunch time, with Lockey Ralston (Year 7) winning a basketball, and Harry Atkinson (Year 9) winning a touch football for their accurate throwing skills.

A total of $380 was donated to the Fight Cancer Foundation to help them provide care, treatment and support for cancer patients and their families, and fund vital research into cancer treatment and cures.

Fashions On The Field

Every year, on the first Tuesday in November, Scone High students dress up in their finest outfits and celebrate Fashions on the Field. This year the SRC set up 2 photo booth-style backdrops with props so students could take fun pictures of themselves at recess.

We then had our traditional catwalk at lunch time – and this year it was bigger than ever! Mr Westbury and the Year 11 Entertainment Industries students setup the stage, speakers, coloured lights and smoke machine to make the event extra entertaining for participants and spectators alike.

Year 9 SRC students Indi Welsh, Riley Brooks, Bowen Partridge and Dylan Denley coordinated the catwalk and did a fabulous job! Our judges, Mr Ampt, Miss Nicolas and Mrs Field had the difficult task of choosing the winners from each year group, and our School Captains Georgia and Matt judged the staff.

Winners are chosen not just on their outfits, but also their “catwalk technique” which included everything from moonwalking to dabbing, walking lunges and over the top poses. Lots of fun and laughter was had by all involved, and it was great to see so many students supporting each other.

Colour Run

As part of the Youth Leadership Conference some students attended in March, an event was planned. We decided to try to increase the positive relationship between students and staff. To do this, we planned a colour run in conjunction with Colour Your Threads for Pos Ed and Where There’s a Will, on the 4^th of November.

The senior students helped plan and set up the event at Bill Rose Sports Complex. The event kicked off with a barbeque before the run. There were activities such as water bombs, water guns, tire hopscotch and a slip and slide along with many colour stations where students were doused in vibrant colours.

The day was a huge success, ending the day with some extremely colourful students.

Under 14's Netball Report

The under 14’s Scone Girls Netball team travelled to Rose Point Park to take on Muswellbrook and Singleton High Schools on a 35 degree day.

The girls opening match was against arch rival “Mussy High”. Sarah Shankley led by example and dominated the mid court she combined well with Lexie “Go, go gadget arms” Meier in Wing Attack and ensured our shooters were delivered great passes into the circle. Caitlyn “long bomb” Coady shot beautiful goals to take the girls to a 1 nil lead at the first quarter break. Defensive duo Legacy Lewis and Brenna Crompton made it tough for the Muswellbrook attackers and consistently turned over the ball and sent it down to our attacking end.

At half time the girls were up by 3. A shuffle in the mid court left Emily Taylor playing out of position in Wing Defence, she was reliable and took 3 intercepts off the centre pass. Annabelle Fisher-Stephens was also playing out of position in this quarter in wing attack and broke beautifully for our centre pass and fed the circle well. We were down by 1 at three quarter time. It was neck and neck for the last quarter. Our secret shooting weapon Caroline Day shot the goal of the day on the outskirts of the circle to take our team to a draw with about 5 minutes to go.

In the last 5 minutes, Brenna Crompton’s intercepts combining with Sarah Shankley’s tireless effort through the mid court gave our shooters the best opportunity to maximise their points.

Long Bomb Coady struck again and her rebounding was superb this secured the girls a win over Muswellbrook by 3 points.

The girls had to back up and play a second game of the day against Singleton High School. I thought this was going to be the toughest game of the day. Singleton High School is about 3 times the size of our school and this gave them a larger pool of girls to select their team from. They had 10 players and subs were needed on such a hot day, in addition to a whole game off to recover from the heat. The first quarter was tight as we went to the break leading by 3.

By the beginning of the 2^nd quarter it was clear that we were the stronger team, going to the half time break 6 goals up. We ended up winning the game 27-14.

It was my absolute pleasure to take away such a wonderful group of girls. They all found the perfect balance of being fierce competitors, but upholding sportsmanship at the same time. Special thanks to Penny Crompton and Danielle Shankley for supporting and transporting our girls. Looking forward to the third round in Newcastle.

2020 Logo Design Competition - Kia-Ora Music Camp

Entries are now open for the 2020 Logo Design Competition for Kia-Ora Music Camp. As it is the 20th Anniversary of Music Camp, the theme for the logo design competition is BIRTHDAY. Students are encouraged to design a simple logo with clearly defined lines and minimal detail. The design will be printed on the camp T-Shirt, concert program and all promotional material.

First prize includes free entry to the camp, a T-Shirt depicting the logo and free tickets to the finale concert on the final evening of camp. Entries are due to the council office by Friday 6th of December. See Miss Davis or Mrs Delechantos in the HSIE staffroom for an entry form and details.

Capers 2019

CAPERS is a high quality performance experience in Tamworth involving over 3,000 students from New England public schools. It is run by teachers on a voluntary basis, to provide every student in every school the opportunity to participate in the creative and performing arts.

This year 14 Scone High School students participated in CAPERS. These students spent many hours learning and practising choreography to be ready for their big moment on stage. Their dance item told the story of the many vibrant festivals from around the world.

Tegan, Jesse, Xena and Bridgette represented the spectacular exuberance of the Rio De Janeiro carnival. Isobel, Sharni, Carolyn and Caitlin were splendid in the sequinned fun of the New Orleans Mardi Gras and Isabelle, Ella, Sophie, Tahlia, Natasha and Shayla were an explosion of colour in the Hindu Holi festival.

Every dancer should be proud of the exemplary way that they represented Scone High School across the three days in Tamworth. Over the three days they performed in a matinee on the Friday and an evening performance on both Friday and Saturday night. They all returned to Scone early Sunday morning happily exhausted.

I would like to thank Mr and Mrs Bogaard for transporting students to and from Tamworth for rehearsals. I would also like to thank the school for subsidising the coach costs to and from Tamworth for the performance weekend, this really helped to keep the excursion cost down.

Thank you to Miss Samantha Schumacher for giving up your weekend to accompany us to Tamworth.

A very big thank you to Isobel Hughes whose amazing dance skills were responsible for ensuring that all dancers learnt the choreography.

Finally I would like to thank the dancers for the time and effort they put into fundraising, rehearsals and performances. What an outstanding group of girls!

Rural Fire Service Fundraiser

NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

Upper Hunter Beef Bonanza Success

Scone High School has once again achieved excellent results at Beef Bonanza. It was another massive year with over 800 student competitors and 400 steers competing in the event. The show took place over three days and 19 Scone High School students from Year 9 and 10 participated in the event.

Day 1 involved setting up our stall, transporting our steers down to the show ground, weighing in of our steers and washing/prepping our steers ready for the big day ahead. The beef show committee also ran a series of workshops throughout the day, which covered a range of different topics including steer preparation, meat tasting/judging, and careers in the beef industry.

Day 2 began with the steer classes. This is where the steers are judged based on their carcase potential. Scone High School brought 7 steers to the show. These included:

Gus:

· A Limo steer that was bred at Scone High School

· This Steer was prepared by Lachlan Cone, Sarah Riley and Brayden Gibson

· Gus received favourable comments and a second look from the Judge but unfortunately just missed out on scoring a place

· He was, however, Mrs Cutler’s personal favourite

Otis

· An Angus x Charolais steer that was generously donated by Jarrod Kennedy

· This steer was prepared by Gabby Kennedy, Danielle Surawski, Bowen Partridge and Logan Boswell

· Otis received great comments about both his muscling and fat cover and placed 5^th in his class.

Crush

· An Angus X Limo steer that was kindly donated by Rodney Newling

· This steer was prepared by Seannah Hall and Sarah McMahon

· Crush steer turned several heads due to his heavy muscling and achieved second place in his heat

Oreo

· A Speckle Park steer that was generously donated by Ken Knight

· This steer was prepared by Anekah Bettens, Maddison Cooper, Rhiarne Edmonds and Kaitlyn Woodward

· Oreo steer immediately caught the judges attention as it walked into the ring and placed 4^th in his class

Micky D

· An Angus X Charolais steer bred by Scone High School

· This steer was prepared by Mikayla Farley, Baylee Edmonds and Ebony Bettens

· Micky D received favourable comments from the judge regarding his size and fat cover and managed to come home with a highly commended ribbon.

Squirt

· An Angus X Charolais steer that was expertly bred by the Brooker family at main camp

· This steer was prepared by Darcy Adams, Kasey Pidgeon and Jackson Munn

· Squirt received great comments regarding his finish and potential meat eating quality; however, although being placed into the frontline, just missed out on receiving a place in a tough class

JB Mauney

· An Angus X Charolais steer kindly donated by Jarod Teague

· This steer was prepared by Danielle Woodward, Lekoda Freemantle and Lachlan Teague

· JB was described as being “the complete package” and walked away with first place in his class

Day 3 consisted of Junior Judging in the morning. There were a large number of entries to judge the steer, heifer and bulls. This was a tough competition with many experienced competitors.

Kaitlyn Woodward was again successful in reaching the oral stages and managed to walk away with fifth place. This was an excellent achievement considering there was over 100 competitors in her age division.

The afternoon was a parader’s competition. In this competition the parader, rather than the steer, is judged.

· In the 14’s age group, Maddison Cooper placed second in her heat.

· In the 15’s age group, Kasey Pidgeon placed second and Seannah Hall placed fifth in their respective heats

· In the 16’s Gabby Kennedy placed fifth in her heat

The Show team is now eagerly awaiting the carcase results to see how our steers performed in this section of the competition.

The show team would like to thank their teachers, family and community members for their guidance, support and generosity over the past 4 months whilst preparing and competing at the show.

During term three, Scone High School ran our annual photography competition. The theme this year was “From a Different Perspective”. Students were invited to submit up to five digital photographs that they felt reflected the theme. A record number of high quality entries were submitted, making the judges’ decision challenging.

Baylee Edmonds entered the winning photograph. Baylee was presented with a “We live here” $50 gift voucher. Tahlia Venz was Runner up and received a $30 “We live here” gift voucher, as did Rubina Davis whose photograph was awarded Highly Commended.

Each of the winners photographs will be enlarged and displayed in the A block hallway, along with the top ten finalist photographs.

Shave For A Cure

Matthew Kilroy of Year 12 has been growing his hair for about 12 months and measures 30cm out a ponytail.

On the 25September Matthew made the brave decision to cut off his locks to be made into wigs for people in need and to also raise funds for the ‘Shave for a Cure’ charity.

Australian Mathematics Competition

Excitement is contagious. And steadily, excitement rose at Scone High School as Thursday 1^st August approached.

The reason for the excitement?

The 2019 Australian Mathematics Competition, (AMC), would run again, challenging thousands of Australian students to test themselves.

The AMC is tough! Attracting students from all over the nation, it focuses on problem solving, challenging students to use their mathematical understanding to calculate answers to some very tricky maths conundrums.

Our excitement was seeing 25 Scone High students make the courageous decision to attempt the premier mathematics competition in Australia. Students in Years 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 entered. In 2019 Scone High School nearly doubled its number of entries from 2018. 25 students compared to 13 the previous year.

A month later the results were released by the Australian Mathematics Trust and Scone High School students demonstrated another quantum leap in performance.

This year we achieved 5 Credit results, including a percentile rank of 71 for Dylan Denley in Year 9. This places Dylan within the top 29% of competition entrants in the Intermediate Section, (Years 9 and 10), Australia wide. Congratulations Dylan!

In addition we recorded 14 Proficiency, (Pass), results with the remaining students being awarded Participation Certificates.

Certificates will be sent from the Australian Mathematics Trust in Term 4, hopefully in time to see competitors receive their reward at a formal assembly in the presence of their families and all of the gathered Scone High School students and staff.

Although most participants have already received their rewards. First, each entrant has been rewarded with the knowledge that they attempted something really tough and, irrespective of their individual result, each knows that doing ‘hard things’ has added to their character. They will know that they can face this challenge again and face other completely unrelated challenges equipped with the perseverance to see them through. Second, most of the entrants enjoyed a pizza lunch on Monday 9^th September. Pizza never tasted so good!

And what of 2020?

Perhaps to “infinity and beyond”!

Rugby Gala Day

On the 30th of August, Scone High School took an under 14’s and an under 16’s teams down to Scone Rugby Union Fields to verse Scone Grammar School in the SGS Challenge.

The boys played very well over the day, drastically improving over the day considering most of them haven’t played rugby before. Unfortunately for us the Grammar school prevailed over us winning both games. Under 14s man of the day was Jackson Smith and under 16s was Connor Poeschl.

We would like to say a massive thank you to Mr Constant for training us and supporting us in a sport we love. Giving us the opportunity to place ourselves in this event it was a huge learning curve for some and just some fun and enjoyment for others. We look forward to having another crack at it next year.

Netball Gala Day

On a cold and wet Friday students in Year 7-10 competed in a netball gala day against Scone Grammar School. Our Year 9 and 10 girls found hard for four quarters, but unfortunately their opponents were too strong. Emily Watts was named players’ player for her strong performance and motivational attitude.

Our Year 7 and 8 girls came away with a convincing win. Brenna Crompton was named players’ player for her strong defensive skills. Special mention must go to Rylie Fletcher in Year 7, who played her first ever organised game of netball and absolutely smashed it. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the girls for help setting up the venue and for the generosity by voluntarily offering to umpire if they were needed.

Year 10 Geography Excursion - Nobby's Beach

Monday 9 September our Year 10 Geography students travelled to Nobby’s Beach in Newcastle.

They participated in fieldwork activities including field sketches, vegetation transects and measured humidity, temperature and gradient. They also learnt about the history of Nobby’s Beach.

Nobby’s Beach is a man-made beach and the top of the headland was cut off for sailing ships? They dredge the harbour entrance 365 days of the year so that coal ships can enter. It is the largest coal exporter in the world! They thoroughly enjoyed the day, despite the wind!

Scone High School is proud to announce we have officially made the grade in operating a GREAT CHOICE Healthy School Canteen.

The NSW Heathy School Canteen Strategy is a key initiative to support the Premier's Priority to tackle childhood obesity. Having a healthy canteen means that our students are more likely to develop healthy eating habits that will have a long-term impact on improving their lives.

National Student Leadership Conference

In March, Where There’s A Will sponsored a group of emerging leaders from the Upper Hunter to Adelaide to attend the National Student Leadership Conference. 4 students were nominated by St Joseph’s Aberdeen, Scone Grammar School, Merriwa Central High School, Muswellbrook High School and Scone High School travelled.

At this event, we learnt and developed skills that we can use to our advantage within our own leadership journeys, but also how we can encourage others to be more effective people and leaders. Using what we took from the conference, we all worked together to create and develop our own summit, focusing on the themes of leadership and wellbeing, combining them and delivering it to 110 students from years 10/11.

In our own summit, we addressed topics such as qualities that build the best leaders, how to be more effective as a person and a leader, and incorporating the 4D process, to introduce a well-being activity in the surrounding schools.

After the completion of the Upper Hunter Youth Well-Being Summit, a groups of 6 students that were nominated from the 20 students, were offered a chance to deliver another well-being summit at Tweed Rivers High School. In August, we flew to the Gold Coast to present to a group of 50 students from year 9-12.

From all of these experiences, everyone who was involved has benefited largely. We have developed and also gained new skills to be a more effective leader. Special thanks to Where There’s A Will for allowing us to have these opportunities, and to Lindy Hunt for all of the support and assistance throughout the process for these summits.

Book Week Draw

Congratulations, the winner of this year’s Book Week draw, Georgia Hinde of Year 11.
The theme for this year’s CBCA Book week was “Reading is my secret power”.
Each day during Book Week Scone High School students participated in “secret quests” to go into the draw to win double movie tickets for Muswellbrook Movie Cinema.

The response was overwhelming and the students were very enthusiastic. The secret quests consisted of questions and clues using augmented reality (AR), an app that is down loaded onto their devices/phones.

Photographers of all abilities are encouraged to enter the Your Health Link National Photographic Competition, which opened on 19 August.

The prestigious competition is run by the Mid North Coast Local Health District, as part of the Your Health Link initiative, a strategy aimed at enhancing community understanding of health and health care information, and how people can apply that information to their lives.

The competition offers a host of prizes in the categories of Mobile Photography, Open, Primary and High School and includes prizes to support healthy school canteen programs.

Wellbeing Week

With our Term 3 Wellbeing Week happening in week 6 (26^th-30^th of August), we thought we’d share what our students created during our last Wellbeing Week.

Each student in the school was given a paper feather and asked to decorate it with one of their character strengths. These feathers were combined to create a whole school group artwork – a colourful set of wings!

The wings are on display in A Block and show the combined strengths of Scone High students. Thanks to street artist Kelsey Montague and the #whatliftsyou campaign for the inspiration.

Formal Assembly Term 3

The Mathematics faculty presented the Formal assembly this term and the stage was stolen by 2 year 10 students who performed exceptionally in front of a very appreciative audience.

Miss Trinity Preston amazed the whole school by performing an absolutely stunning version of the Song “You Say” and Miss Isobel Hughes knocked it out of the park with her self-choreographed dancing performance. Proving mathematics is not just about the numbers.

Part of the song lyrics to Trinity’s song by Laura Daigle are:

I keep fighting voices in my mind that say I'm not enough
Every single lie that tells me I will never measure up
Am I more than just the sum of every high and every low?
You say I am strong when I think I am weak

It a song about worth and if you measure up. The only way that you can really tell is if you have some evaluation. Laura Daigle struggled with her perceived inadequacies and wrote this song so that she could be reminded every day that the truth is don’t get buried in confusion remember to steady the course.

The best way of evaluating a problem is the through logic and the best way of improving your logic is to have a strong grasp of mathematics.

The Assembly was run by the SRC and opened by Miss Tegan Gibson who gave the acknowledgment to country, Matylda Hayne Starting the proceedings and Indi Welsh introducing the award recipients. Dylan Denly, not only represented the SRC but also receiving an excellence award.

Chocolate Chip Excavation

Year 7 students recently practised their archaeological skills by excavating chocolate chips from cookies using toothpicks!

Learning Outcome:

Year Seven will simulate the process of archaeological excavation as they "excavate" the chocolate chips in cookies. You will discover how excavation is both destructive and scientific. You will practice coordinate graphing skills by mapping the results of their excavations.

Fabulous Fomal Wear Giveaway

Upper Hunter Community Services in Muswellbrook are holding a formal wear pop-up shop to give a helping hand to those who need it this formal season, especially with families struggling with the drought, we would like to offer our help.

We are asking for donations of formal dresses, suits, shoes and accessories that people no longer wear or need. We will then be holding 3 nights where anyone who needs can come along and try on the clothing. It is all free and we will only be accepting donations in good condition

Leadership & Teamwork Days

On Friday 9^th August and Wednesday 14^th August, Year 5 students from Aberdeen, Belltrees, Ellerston, Blandford and Scone Public Schools visited Scone High School to participate in Leadership & Teamwork Days.

The aim of the days was to encourage and develop positive leadership and teamwork skills, which the Year 5 students will use as they consider leadership roles within their schools in 2020.

The students worked in groups to complete challenges and activities that tested and enhanced their knowledge and use of leadership and teamwork.

These challenges included the Giant Skis, Livewire Spider-web, a Multi-Legged race, Human Knots, the Tarp Flip, a team Ninja Challenge and many more.

Every student had a turn at being the leader of their group, and everyone worked as part of a team. Students showed effective communication and cooperation, as well as character strengths such as bravery, kindness, creativity, honesty, self-regulation and social intelligence.

Thank you to the Year 10 and SRC students who showed leadership by running activities and working with groups of Year 5 students on these days.

Beanies For Brain Cancer

The SRC ran a Beanies for Brain Cancer fundraiser on Friday 2^nd August. Students wore beanies to school for a gold coin donation, and money was also raised from a sausage sizzle. Scone High Students raised almost $400, which was donated to vital research into brain cancer.

Melbourne Cup Tour

On Thursday 1^st August, 2019 a small contingent of Scone High students went to Godolphin to celebrate the horses birthday, Lohnro’s 21^st birthday and a visit from the Melbourne cup.

Students enjoyed a small stallion parade, had photos taken with the cup, and cut and ate some birthday cake. They learnt about the tradition of the Cup, and how it is made new each year for the winning owners.

They were spoken to by a jockey that had won the cup many years ago and they visited the Godolphin trophy room. Students also made some industry connections for the future.

On the night of Thursday 27^th June 2019, the SRC ran a school sleep out to show support for the homeless people in our local area.

Around 20 students participated in the sleep out, the students would like to extend our thanks to Woolworths Scone for their kind donations of soup and water to help out with the student’s food.

A huge thanks to Mr Ampt and Ms Hukehuke for supervising our students all night as they “slept” in the school hall.

Thanks also to Upper Hunter Homeless Support for the fantastic job they do in our region!

Creative and Active Kids vouchers now available

Creative kids can now put a $100 voucher towards extra-curricular creative activities outside of school.

Together with Active Kids, this program aims to encourage more NSW children to participate in a range of extra-curricular activities such as coding, languages, circus, performing arts and visual arts.

Parents can apply for one $100 voucher for each child enrolled in school on the Creative Kids website and use it towards the cost of registration, participation or tuition. You just redeem the voucher with a registered provider in your area when making your payment.

This is a great opportunity for your child to become involved in a range of activities that will build on their education, growth and development.

Service NSW is working with industry bodies to deliver the program.

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21^st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

My Community Project is a new NSW Government funding program that is all about local ideas, local projects and local decisions.

You can apply now for grants from $20,000 - $200,000 for projects that will make a difference to your community. Projects could include new playground equipment, sports facilities, paths or ramps to improve access, public art or a community service.

The local community can vote for their favourite projects in July and successful projects will be announced in September.

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.
If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.
Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.
Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

We are excited to participate in the Share Our Space program when it returns these autumn school holidays. Participating public schools across regional and metro areas of the state will continue to open their playgrounds, ovals and sports courts for the whole community to enjoy.

You and your children can play in public schools all over NSW. Schools from Lord Howe Island Central School 600km off the east coast of mainland Australia all the way to Palinyewah Public School in the far west will share their outdoor facilities as part of the program.

Participating schools are open 7 days a week between 8am-6pm from 13 to 26 April 2019, including weekends and public holidays.

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

Well where do I started. I left on the 19th of January I was about to start the biggest adventure of my life. It took 28 hours, with 2 stopovers 1 in Dubia I was there for 2 hours and I took off again and was on my way to Heathrow (London) with my 2nd stop over and was there for another 2 hours. At this point I was so nervous and full of excitement, I was about to do the most amazing things I have done. It took 2 hours to fly to Vienna,Austria. I landed in Vienna on the 20th at 12:52pm.

Driving and parking safely near your school

The beginning and end of the school day are busy times for pedestrians and drivers outside schools.

You can help keep children safe by remembering the following:

drop your child off and pick them up on the school side of the road
never call out to them from across the road - it is very dangerous
always take extra care in 40km school zones
follow all parking signs - these help keep your child as safe as possible
park responsibly even if it means you have to walk further to the school gate
never double park - it is illegal and puts children at risk
never do a U-turn or a three point turn outside the school as it puts children at risk of harm
model safe and considerate pedestrian and driver behaviours to your child
always give way to pedestrians particularly when entering and leaving driveways.

Scone High School will transition to the new NSW Public Schools' finance system and a new bank account on 16 October 2017.

To ensure a smooth transition, there will be changes to the way we accept payments from parents and carers.

EFTPOS payments: We will not be able to accept EFTPOS payments between 11 October and 18 October 2017. Please ensure that you have made any outstanding EFTPOS payments before 11 October, 2017. From 17 October 2017, EFTPOS payments will be accepted as before.
Cash and cheque payments: Between 11 October 2017 and 16 October 2017, we will also not be able to accept payments by cash or cheque as we prepare to close our current bank account and transition to the new one. Please ensure that you have made any outstanding cash or cheque payments before 11 October 2017. From 17 October 2017, cash and cheque payments will be accepted as before.

Circus Arts Camp

The Circus Arts Camp is on again! The 2017 Camp will be held at Dubbo College Delroy Campus from Wednesday Oct 4 to Friday Oct 6 2017. The camp is open to all public school students from years 5-12 and caters for students/artists of all levels from beginner to advanced skills. During the camp students will participate in a range of camp including manipulation, balance, aerials and clown.

The camp aims to give students a valuable educational and Circus experience. It will give students the opportunity to enhance their skills by working with professional performers and trainers, while exposing them to a variety of apparatus and skills.

It is expected that all students who apply will be accepted although a maximum of 80 places are available. A confirmation email will be sent to parents/caregivers so please ensure that an up-to-date email is provided.

Tell Them From Me Survey

This Term, our school will be participating in the Partners in Learning parent survey, another part of the Tell Them From Me suite of surveys (student, teacher and parent surveys) on student engagement. The survey asks parents and carers questions about different factors that are known to impact on student wellbeing and engagement.

Running this survey will help our school understand parents' and carers' perspectives on their child's experience at school. These include: communication between parents/carers and staff, activities and practices at home and parent/carer views on the school's support of learning and behaviour. This valuable feedback will help our school make practical improvements.

The survey is conducted entirely online at home or on public computers. The survey will typically take 15 minutes or less to complete and is completely confidential. The parent survey will be conducted between 22 August and 21 October. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary, however, your responses are very much appreciated.

Indyana Taylor has been selected as a member of the Regional Youth Orchestra NSW to play cello. Last Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, Indyana spent time at the Sydney Opera house and the Australia Opera Headquarters in Surry Hills as part of the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra Project. She worked with the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra and around 40 other young musicians from regional NSW conservatoriums, rehearsing two pieces from the current production Carmen.
The youth orchestra members were educated on the production of an opera, from start to finish. Costume and wig making, sets, props, music rehearsals with a singer and conductor and a comprehensive Opera House tour were experienced.
The youth orchestra had the opportunity to watch rehearsals of current opera Simon Boccanegra and world renowned opera singer Roberto Alagna.
A highlight was playing in the Joan Sutherland Theatre pit. The workshop culminated in a performance of the pieces rehearsed and the Regional Youth Orchestra was delighted to have a surprise opera singer from the Carmen production perform with them.

2016 Sport Bus Pass

Commencing Term 1 2016 the PDHPE faculty are initiating a bus payment system for students travelling by bus to sport each Wednesday afternoon. Rather than pay $1 each week students are to pay $10 per term to the front office prior to the commencement of sport that term. This is aimed to assist those who regularly forget to pay bus money each week. Upon payment students will be issued a bus pass which will need to be shown to the teacher each week as they board the bus. Not paying this cost will result in the students being restricted to school sports. Venue costs will still be collected on a weekly basis at the venue.

In our continuing effort to increase school effectiveness, we will be implementing an online survey for parents – Tell Them From Me (TTFM) Partners in Learning Parent Survey.

TheTTFM Partners in Learning Parent Survey is an online survey that allows parents to give their input into school improvement initiatives in an anonymous way. All parents will be given an opportunity to participate. You are encouraged to complete the survey, but may choose not to. Everyone completing the survey will be given a random username and password. Thus, respondents cannot be linked to their responses, ensuring anonymity.

Successful schools foster greater communication with parents, encourage parental involvement in their child's schoolwork, and enlist parents to volunteer at the school and participate in school governance. This survey is based on a comprehensive questionnaire covering several aspects of parents' views of their child's experiences at home and school. The survey also provides feedback to schools about the extent to which parents feel the schools supports learning and positive behaviour and promotes a safe and inclusive environment.

The TTFMPartners in Learning Parent Survey was created by The Learning Bar, based on the work by co-founder Dr. J. Douglas Willms. Dr. Willms is widely known nationally and internationally for his work on the development of educational monitoring systems, including the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development. Since 2004, Tell Them From Me has quickly grown to become Canada's largest national school survey.

A huge thank you and well done goes out to all the parents, students and friends who tirelessly collected and brought in countless amounts of Woolworths Earn & Learn stickers to our school. Your hard earned points through the system have allowed us to purchase many valuable products that will enhance your child's learning and experiences here at Scone High School.

Scone High was one of the 12,500 schools who participated in the Earn & Learn program. Our sticker sheets were put toward the purchase of some fantastic scientific equipment, such as see-through compositing systems, a human torso analogue, stethoscopes, generator, musical instruments including a violin, castanets, mini congas, bongos and other small multicultural instruments, Art supplies, and resource books. Points are also credited to the Scholastic book club, which will allow the library to purchase fiction and non-fiction books.

Scone High School would like to thank Woolworths Earn & Learn and Modern Teaching Aids for their contribution to our students' learning through this great program.

This year, School Photo Day will be on Monday 25^th March (Week 9). In the coming weeks, all students will receive a photo envelope which has been pre-printed with their name. If you wish to purchase photos, specify your selection on the envelope and enclose payment via cash or credit card details.

All students are required to return their envelope to the photographer on the day, as the school office will not take payments on the photographers' behalf. All students will have their photo taken, both individually and as part of their year group, even if they are not purchasing photos. It is extremely important that all students come dressed in full school uniform with appropriate shoes, hair, makeup, jewellery and so on. Students not wearing uniform will be made to go home and change, or wear a uniform from the clothing pool. Inappropriate makeup, hair or jewellery will need to be removed or changed before having photos taken.

Miss Davis will distribute the photo envelopes to students when they arrive. Separate envelopes for family photos will also be available.

Year 10 Road Safety Course

The Rotary Club of Scone is providing buses for our Year 10 students to attend an outstanding day on Road Safety. With Year 10 starting the process of gaining L plates, this is an excellent opportunity for them to learn some very important information to keep them and their friends safe.

Information was sent to all Year 10 parents in the mail last week. The cost to students is $10/head, which is quite heavily subsidised by Rotary International. Money and permission notes are due to the front office NO LATER THAN Wednesday 13^th June 2012 at 9.30am.

Students are asked to bring their food for the day as there is nowhere at the race course to purchase food.

Thanks to a Coal and Allied grant of $1000, a contribution by the SRC and a donation from the P & C of $500, the SRC have been able to attract Sam Cawthorne to our school as a motivational speaker on Tuesday 19^th June. Sam had an accident and was pronounced dead. He defied the odds and chose life. His presentation will inspire anyone to "have a go" even when things get a bit tough. All students will be involved in the presentation. They are asked to contribute $1 as they enter the MPU to assist in covering the $2500 cost for Sam to travel to, stay and present to students in Scone. Students in Year 6 are also invited to attend the presentation.

To all those families who completed their PSP survey, a huge thank you. We had 95% of our PSP surveys returned to the school. This was a fantastic effort! The SRC roll class won the pizza lunch for being the first group with all their surveys returned. Dara Poeschl's family won the hamper from the draw where every family who returned the survey had their name placed. We eagerly await the results to see if we were successful with our application.

I would especially like to thank Mrs Frost and Mrs Eather for assisting Mr Congdon and the students in the lead up to the Royal Easter. Their work meant that our students learnt a great deal at both the Tamworth and Upper Hunter shows and are well prepared for Sydney. Launch of the Upper Hunter Youth Council

Some of our students have been having input into the newly formed Youth Council. It has been formed as a result of the Mind Matters work that we have been doing with our partner primary schools. The launch will take place on Friday 4^th May at the Upper Hunter Shire Council building in Scone. I congratulate our representative on their initiative and trust that they will continue to work hard for young people across the shire.

Students are invited to enter a competition to design a logo for the Youth Council. There is a $50 prize for the winning entry. Entries can be given to SRC representatives by 27^th April.

I would like to congratulate Brianna Frost, Amilia Hall, Chris Hodge, Lachlan White and Kirsten Smith for their contributions to the group.

This year the P & C have put out a challenge to the students and their families to see who can raise the most money at a term car wash. Every week 5 Saturday, a sporting house will be responsible for doing the wash.

If your child is in Meekah, your turn is almost here. Details will be sent home with students this week. We need students and parents to help wash cars, cook a BBQ or bake biscuits/slices which can be sold for morning tea.

If your student is not in Meekah, but you need your car washed, please bring it to the undercover area at the back of B Block between 9.00 am and 1.00pm. Regular cars cost $15 each, with 4WD's $20.

After being changed to the week after our planned date, we faced a cloudy day to start, but it developed into a great day all round. Thank you to all those parents who came along and cheered the students on. Congratulations to all those students who participated and enjoyed a fantastic day. Many of our students performed extremely well and have moved on to represent the school at the zone carnival to be held this week at the Scone Pool. Age champions and record breakers will be acknowledged at our next formal assembly.

Scone High Students’ Art in International Exhibition

Artworks by Scone High School's Year 8 students, Jodie Cutler and Crystal Crowfoot, are about to be displayed in Nagoya, Japan, as part of an international exhibition showcasing students' art.

The 33^rd Annual Nagoya Art Exchange received over 1000 entries from primary and secondary school students across NSW, but only 80 of the artworks could be selected for inclusion in the exhibition.

Both Jodie and Crystal were thrilled to find out that their artworks were selected to be exhibited in Nagoya alongside the other selected artworks by children from Nagoya, Los Angeles, Mexico City and Ninjing. Participating in an exhibition such as this provides students and schools with valuable recognition. It also provides a wonderful opportunity for students to participate in international friendship and cultural exchange activities.

Students are asked to meet Miss Partridge under the trees at the front of the school. They will begin with an assembly where they will meet important people they need to know around the school, and receive their timetables. Students are asked to be at school by 8.50 am that day.

In the afternoon, Year 7 students will leave class a little earlier to learn how the bus system and pedestrian crossings work at our school. If parents are dropping students off or collecting them from school, they are asked to do so in Park or Waverly Streets to allow students to use the crossings and hence be a lot safer.

Each year, the Lions Club of Scone hosts the above competition for young people within Scone. This year, three Year 11 boys entered. Gareth Goode, Nick Hall and Ryan Healey all represented our school with distinction at the special evening last Wednesday. Students had to respond to two impromptu questions and present a five minute prepared speech. All students had previously attended an interview session with a panel of community judges. On the evening, Ryan was successful in winning both the public speaking award and the Scone Lions Club Youth of the Year Competition. Ryan won a weekend leadership workshop in April 2012 and he will move on to the next round of the competition, which takes place early in 2012.

Senior Science Field Study

On Wednesday, 17^th August the Year 11 Senior Science class conducted a Field Study at the Towarri National Park Washpools. The Field Study was a compulsory part of their current coursework on "The Local Environment".

Although it was a wet and very cold day the students managed to successfully mark out a transect and measure the abundance and distribution of a number of plant and animal species in the area. One of the big interests of the day was finding a wombat burrow. From a scientific point of view this was a great way to see in real life an example of an animal adaptation, but it was also very interesting to see that Chris Walker is quite at home in a wombat burrow.

The second part of our day involved testing the abiotic conditions of the ecosystem. These included air and water temperature, dissolved oxygen content, pH and salinity. The students worked hard despite the freezing conditions and gathered some interesting results. After this hard work we were all rewarded with a hot sausage sandwich expertly cooked by Billy Herbert and Nick Fenton under the very vocal guidance of Issy Buckney.

I would like to thank all students for their exemplary conduct on the day and a big thank you to Mrs Young for driving the bus and imparting her great knowledge.

Golf Clinic

A group of eight golfers attended a group golf lesson during sport on Wednesday 24^th August. This was at the Muswellbrook Golf Course with Paul Finkle (Muswellbrook Golf Club Professional). It was a great opportunity for the students to improve their golf skills and have further enjoyment of the game. Each student was receptive to instruction, and now have a few things to focus on. It was a pleasure to accompany the group. Thanks also to Mrs Hallett who assisted with transport.

Student Involvement In SES

Since the commencement of the school year, three senior boys have been volunteer members of the Murrurundi State Emergency Services (SES). Terry Hill of Year 12 and Wade Purcell and Aaron Mostyn of Year 11 have been active since joining this vital community service organisation.

They have been through a period of training, including night searches, roof damage control and First Aid, including CPR. Recently, they were marshals for the Scone Horse Festival parade along Kelly Street and Guernsey, teaming up with the Scone SES. They have embarked on a two-year training period. In the near future, these students will be trained in general emergency procedures and could find themselves called up for helping the recovery efforts for natural disasters like those experienced in Queensland in January, or in Victoria in 2009. They may be called upon to assist local police in crime scenes.

This selfless dedication to community service brings honour to themselves, their families and our school and we are very proud of their commitment.

Congratulations to Year 8 student and aspiring artist Jodie Cutler! Jodie recently entered a state-wide art competition which was run by the Reconciliation Council of NSW. The theme for the competition was "You, Me, Us" in celebration of Reconciliation Week. Jodie was one of the 12 finalists selected from over 500 entries across the state. She received a Highly Commended award, and the Reconciliation Council of NSW has decided to make her artwork into a postcard which will be widely distributed across NSW to promote reconciliation. This is a fantastic result from a talented student. Well done, Jodie!

Work Experience for Year 10

Year 10 have the wonderful opportunity of participating in work experience during the last week of term 2. All students should have their places organised by now and be well prepared for the experience. We ask that parents of Year 10 ensure that their student is dressed appropriately for the work they are participating in; they are representing the school and should be dressed well.

Parent/Teacher Interviews

Parent Teacher Interviews for Years 7 - 10 are to be held on Wednesday 29 June 2011 in the MPU between 4.00pm and 7.00pm. Students will receive booking sheets next week to make appointments with their teachers. Interviews are 10 minutes each. We would really appreciate it if people could keep to this time, as there are many parents to be seen on that evening.
